Business model differences
Captive agents sell products from one insurer — State Farm, Allstate, Farmers, and similar brands. Independent agents contract with many carriers and earn commissions per policy placed. Both earn commissions; neither should charge you a separate broker fee for standard personal lines.
When independents shine
